There is a street market in the town next to ours every Sunday. My family goes there two or three times a year. Its stalls spread along the main square and into the side streets. Our drive there takes about thirty minutes. I sit in the back with my sister and we listen to music on her phone.

The market opens at eight in the morning. Its early stalls sell vegetables and fresh fruit. My mom always visits her favorite cheese seller first. His name is Gregor and his cheeses come from a farm in the hills. Her choice is a firm yellow cheese with a mild taste. Its price is fair and it lasts a week in our fridge.

There are also stalls with handmade things. A woman sells scarves from her table near the fountain. Their colors are bright orange, purple, and blue. Their fabric is soft and light. I touched one and its feel was like cotton. My sister bought a purple one with her pocket money.

My dad looks for old books. His favorite spot is a table at the corner near the clock tower. The man who runs it does not speak much. His eyes scan every person who touches his books. I found a small book about stars in his pile. Its cover was faded but its pages were clean. My dad bought it for a good price.

There is a food stall near the center of the market. Its owner is a tall man with a red jacket. His menu board shows five different meals. My sister and I shared a plate of warm potato pancakes. Their outside was crispy and their inside was soft. We ate them fast because their smell attracted other people.

Our friends often meet us there on Sunday mornings. Tom and his brother always arrive late. His brother carries a big bag for the things they buy. Tom holds their shopping list. They buy fruit for their mom and bread for their dad. Their basket fills up quickly.

We usually leave the market around noon. My mom carries her cheese and a bag of apples. My dad has his old books. My sister has her purple scarf around her neck. I carry my star book under my arm. Our car is warm in the sun.

On the way home my dad tells us about his books and their stories. My mom shows us her recipe idea for the cheese. Its ingredients are in her phone notes. My sister reads her book in the back. I look at the map in my star book and try to find patterns.

There is always something new at the market. Its energy is different each time. My favorite part is the food because its smells change with the seasons. Our family loves its rhythm and its colors. We go again next Sunday if the weather is good.
