He keeps his recipe books on a shelf in the kitchen. He opens one at the kitchen table and reads the recipe carefully. Then he gets the ingredients from the fridge or from the cupboard above the counter.
My mother helps him sometimes. She chops the onions on the board at the edge of the counter. She puts the pieces in a bowl next to the stove. My father heats oil in the pan on the stove and adds the onions.
I help too. My job is to wash the vegetables. I stand at the sink and wash everything under cold water. Then I put the clean vegetables in a bowl on the counter next to my father.
My little brother stays out of the kitchen. He sits at the table in the living room and draws. He waits patiently for the food to be ready.
The soup goes on the stove first. It cooks for twenty minutes. Then my father puts the chicken in the oven. The oven is at the side of the kitchen. He sets the temperature and puts the timer on the shelf above the oven.
We eat at the big table in the dining room. The dishes go in the center of the table. The bread basket sits at one end. Everyone takes food from the dishes on the table.
After the meal, we clear the table and put the dishes in the sink. My mother washes and I dry. We stack everything in the cupboard above the sink. My father rests in the armchair in the living room.
Sunday lunch is the best meal of the week. I love spending time in the kitchen with my family. It is warm, it smells wonderful, and everyone is happy.
