Tom's birthday is on Saturday. He is twelve years old today. His mother organises a small party at their home. Their home is in Elm Street. It is a friendly house with a big garden.

There are ten children at the party. There are six boys and four girls. Tom's best friend is Jake. He is tall and funny. His gift is a book about football. There is a note inside the book. It says Happy birthday from Jake.

Tom's cousin is at the party too. Her name is Lily. She is eleven. Her gift is a small puzzle. There are five hundred pieces in the puzzle. It is a picture of a world map. Lily puts it on the table next to the other gifts.

Tom's mother puts the food on the table in the garden. There are sandwiches, chips, and small cakes on the table. There is also a big fruit bowl. There are apples, oranges, and grapes in it. There are bottles of juice and water on a small table next to the big table.

Jake says, Can you pass me the chips, please? Tom says, Yes, here you are. Lily says, Can I have some juice? Tom's mother says, Of course. There are cups on the small table. Help yourself.

After the food, Tom's father organises a game. He says, Stand in a circle, please. Listen carefully. I can say a word. Can you think of a word that starts with the same letter? Jake says, I can try. Lily says, I think I can do it. Tom says, We can all try.

The game is fun. All the children can think of words. Some words are easy. Some are harder. Tom is good at the game. He can say a word very quickly. Jake can say funny words that make everyone laugh.

After the game, Tom's mother brings the birthday cake. It is a chocolate cake. There are twelve candles on it. There is one candle for each year. Tom's name is on the cake in white icing.

Tom's mother says, Blow out your candles and make a wish. Tom blows out all twelve candles. Everyone claps. Jake says, What is your wish? Tom says, I cannot tell you. It is a secret.

Tom opens his gifts. He says thank you for each one. His favourite gift is a new football. It is from his parents. There is a card with the football. His mother's handwriting is in the card.

Lily says, Can we play in the garden? Tom says, Yes, we can. Come on, everyone.

They can all play in the garden. It is a warm, sunny afternoon. There are flowers and a small pond in the garden. There is a bench near the pond. Tom's parents sit on the bench and watch the children.

It is a happy birthday. There is music, food, and laughter. Tom is happy. His family is proud. His friends are around him. It is a perfect day.
