We were sitting together when Clara was telling me about her new course. She was studying design three days a week while she was working in a shop on Saturdays. I was listening carefully because her schedule sounded busy.
Outside, people were walking quickly with umbrellas. A cyclist was stopping under the awning while the traffic light was red. The city was not quiet yesterday because the rain was hitting the windows hard.
Clara was showing me photos on her phone when the power flickered once. The lights were dim for a second, and the music was not playing for a moment. Were the staff worried? They were not worried because this happened before.
We were talking about our parents while the rain was getting softer. I was explaining that Dad was repairing the garden fence last weekend. Clara was saying she did not visit home for three weeks because of exams.
At four o'clock a group of students was entering the cafe. They were shaking water from their coats while the waiter was finding extra chairs. I was moving my bag when one student was asking if the wifi was working.
The connection was not working well, so Clara was writing notes on paper. I was drawing small ideas in the margin while she was describing her project. We were not planning to stay long, but the weather was keeping us inside.
When the sky turned grey again, the waiter was bringing more hot water. Clara was cold, so I was sharing my scarf for a few minutes. She was laughing because the scarf was too short for both of us.
We were leaving at five when the rain stopped completely. The street was shining, and Clara was taking one last photo of the cafe sign. I was walking her to the bus stop while she was finishing her story about the design exam.
Did she pass the test last term? Yes, she passed, but she was not satisfied with one project grade. She was hoping to improve this month while she was learning new software at school.
I was watching the bus arrive when Clara was hugging me quickly. She was getting on while I was waving from the corner. The cafe door was closing behind us, and the city was feeling calm again.
Yesterday was simple, but the afternoon was full of small moments.
