Mom was chopping vegetables when the phone rang. She wiped her hands and answered it quickly. The caller was Aunt Rosa, and she sounded worried.
While Mom was talking, Dad was still reading near the window. I was listening from the stairs because the voice sounded loud. Rosa was explaining a problem at work.
Suddenly Rosa stopped talking and the line went quiet. Mom was asking questions, but nobody answered. Then Rosa called back thirty seconds later.
While Rosa was speaking again, I was writing notes about my math task. Hugo, my brother, was playing a game in the living room. He was not listening to the kitchen conversation.
Rosa said she was driving home when her car stopped on a hill. She was waiting for help when a truck driver stopped behind her. The driver was checking her engine when rain started.
Mom was telling Dad the story while she was stirring soup on the stove. Dad was putting the paper down and looking serious. I was thinking about Aunt Rosa alone on a dark road.
Hugo was still playing when Mom asked him to set the table. He was running to the cupboard when he dropped a plate. The plate broke on the floor, and we all looked up.
While Hugo was cleaning the pieces, Mom was finishing the soup. Dad was calling Uncle Ben to ask about Rosa. Ben was saying Rosa was safe at a garage near the motorway.
I was carrying plates to the table when Hugo came back with a dustpan. Mom was smiling again because Rosa was warm and dry. The kitchen was smelling good while we were waiting for news.
At seven Rosa arrived at our door. She was wearing a wet coat and holding a cup of tea from the garage. She was laughing when she told us the full story.
While we were eating dinner, Rosa was describing the kind truck driver. Dad was asking short questions, and Hugo was listening with wide eyes. I was happy because everyone was home and safe.
That Thursday showed how one phone call can change a calm evening. Mom was cooking, Rosa was driving, and we were studying — then everything moved fast. When Rosa arrived, we were still eating, and the house felt warm again.
