I am Emma. Last Friday my cousins Jake and Lily were visiting our house. We were watching a film in the living room after dinner.

Mom was washing dishes in the kitchen while Dad was reading emails on his laptop. We were sitting on the sofa with blankets when the screen went black.

The lights went out in every room at once. Jake was asking what happened when Lily was looking for her phone torch. I was standing up and trying to find the remote on the table.

While we were waiting in the dark, we were hearing wind outside the windows. Dad was coming from the office when he bumped into a chair. Mom was calling from the kitchen that she was fine.

Dad was opening a drawer and searching for candles. He was lighting two candles when Jake was laughing at the shadows on the wall. Lily was taking photos with her phone when the battery warning appeared.

We were sitting in a circle on the floor when Dad told a short story about a camping trip. He was describing how stars were shining while we were listening quietly. Mom was joining us with cups of hot chocolate.

While Mom was passing the cups, a car was driving past and lit the room for a second. Jake was dropping his cup when Lily caught it fast. Hot chocolate was spilling on the rug, but nobody was burned.

Mom was cleaning the rug while Dad was checking the fuse box in the hall. He was turning switches when the fridge started again downstairs. The lights were coming back in the kitchen first.

We were cheering when the television screen flashed on. The film was still paused where the hero was running through rain. Lily was pressing play when the doorbell rang.

Our neighbor Mr Shaw was standing outside with a toolbox. He was saying the whole street was losing power for ten minutes. He was fixing a cable on a pole while we were watching from the window.

While Mr Shaw was working, Jake was helping Dad carry extra blankets to the sofa. I was texting friends that we were safe at home. Mom was baking small cookies because the oven was working again.

We were eating cookies and finishing the film when the storm moved away. Rain was stopping while birds were calling outside. Dad was turning off extra lights when we were saying goodnight to Jake and Lily.

That Friday felt longer than a normal movie night. We were watching, the power was going out, and neighbors were helping on a windy street. When the lights returned, we were still together, and the story on screen finally reached its happy end.
