My cat was sleeping on the chair while I was turning pages slowly. I was enjoying the story when a loud knock came from the front door. Mom was gardening in the back yard and did not hear it.
I was putting a bookmark in the book when I went downstairs. My friend Sara was standing on the step with a wet umbrella. She was smiling and holding two tickets in her hand.
Sara was saying the cinema was showing a new comedy when I opened the door wide. I was asking about the time while she was shaking water from her coat. The film was starting at four o'clock.
While Sara was waiting in the hall, I was running upstairs to change clothes. Mom was coming inside and was looking surprised to see Sara. Dad was making tea in the kitchen when we were talking fast about plans.
Mom was saying we could go if we finished lunch first. Sara was helping set the table while Dad was cutting bread. I was telling them about the book I was reading before Sara arrived.
We were eating soup when Sara was describing the funny scenes in the trailer. My little brother Ben was listening and was asking to come too. Mom was saying Ben was too young for that film.
After lunch Sara and I were walking to the bus stop together. Other people were waiting under the shelter while buses were passing on the wet road. Sara was checking her phone when our bus arrived.
We were sitting near the window on the bus when an older man was telling jokes to his wife. Sara was laughing quietly while I was looking at shops along the street. The city was shining after the rain.
We were buying popcorn at the cinema when the first show was starting. People were finding seats in the dark hall. Sara was whispering about actors we liked when the lights went down.
While we were watching the comedy, everyone was laughing at the same jokes. I was thinking about my quiet reading hour at home only two hours earlier. Sara was eating popcorn when her phone vibrated once.
During the break Sara's mom was calling to check we were safe. Sara was answering in a low voice near the exit doors. I was buying water when the second half was beginning.
We were leaving the cinema at six while street lights were turning on. Sara was saying the film was better than she expected. I was agreeing and was thinking how a knock on the door changed my whole afternoon.
That Sunday moved from calm reading to loud laughter in a dark hall. I was reading, Sara was arriving, and later we were sharing jokes with strangers in a cinema seat. When I came home, Mom was cooking dinner, and my book was still waiting on the bed.
