We arrived in Riverton on Friday evening after a three-hour drive. My partner Alex was tired, but I was excited because I had not visited this city for five years.
While Alex was checking into the hotel, I was looking at a map of the old town. The receptionist was explaining where the best bakeries were when a group of tourists came through the door with wet coats.
We did not eat at the hotel because we wanted local food. We walked to a small restaurant near the river. The waiter was recommending fish soup when Alex was reading the menu slowly.
Did we enjoy the first meal? Yes, we enjoyed it, although the kitchen was busy and the service was not fast. We were talking about our plans for Saturday while the rain was tapping on the windows.
Sunday, 15 March
I was waking early because the church bells were ringing across the square. Alex was sleeping until eight, so I was drinking coffee alone in the cafe downstairs.
While I was writing this diary, Alex was buying tickets for the museum online. The website was not working well, but he found seats for the afternoon tour.
We were walking along the river path when we met two friends from our university days. They were visiting from another country and were staying in a hostel near the bridge. We did not expect to see anyone we knew.
At noon we were sharing lunch in the market hall. My friend Nina was telling stories about her job while her husband was watching boats on the water. Were we happy to meet them? We were very happy.
In the afternoon we were visiting the art museum because Alex loves modern painting. I was reading labels on the wall when a guide was speaking to a school group in the next room. The children were not quiet, but their teacher was patient.
We were leaving the museum when the sky cleared. Alex was taking photos of the bridge while I was resting on a bench. I was not feeling tired anymore because the sun was warm.
In the evening we were cooking pasta in our hotel kitchenette. Alex was chopping tomatoes when I was setting the table near the window. We were not going out because we wanted a quiet night after a long day.
Before we slept, we were planning Sunday walks on the hill outside the city. The forecast was saying rain might return, but we were not worried. We were already thinking about coming back next spring when the gardens were open.
This weekend was short, but every hour felt full. We were driving, we were meeting friends, and we were discovering streets we did not know before Monday morning.
