Yesterday I visited my uncle in the city hospital. I was feeling anxious on the bus because I had not been inside a hospital ward for many years.
When I arrived, the reception desk was busy and nurses were moving quickly between corridors. A volunteer was showing visitors where to wash hands before entering the room.
Uncle Joe was resting in bed when I came in. He was not looking as pale as I expected, and he was smiling weakly when he saw me. Was he in pain? He was uncomfortable, but the nurses were controlling it with medicine.
While we were talking, a doctor was checking the chart at the door. She was asking short questions and was listening to his breathing with a small instrument.
I was bringing grapes and a magazine from home. Joe was reading the magazine later while I was speaking with his roommate about the weather. The roommate was not talking much because he was tired after surgery.
At lunch time a nurse was bringing soup and bread on a tray. Joe was not eating everything, but he was drinking water slowly. I was helping him sit up when the pillow was slipping.
In the afternoon family members were arriving one by one. My aunt was crying quietly while she was holding Joe's hand. Cousins were standing near the window and were looking at the park below.
I was leaving at five when visiting hours were ending. Joe was waving from the bed while I was putting on my coat. I was promising to return on Wednesday after work.
On the bus home I was thinking about how calm the staff were during a difficult day. I was not feeling afraid anymore because Joe was receiving good care.
Today I am sending a message to thank the nurse who was helping us find the correct floor. I was forgetting the room number at first, but she was patient and kind.
This visit reminded me that small acts matter when someone is recovering. I was sitting, we were talking, and time was passing gently in that bright room on the third floor.
