Dear Aunt Helen,

I am writing because yesterday was one of those days when nothing went according to plan. I think you will laugh when you hear the story.

I was leaving home at eight because I had a dentist appointment across town. While I was locking the door, my phone was ringing and I was talking to Mom for five minutes.

At the bus stop I was checking the timetable when the number seven bus was passing without stopping. The driver was not seeing me because I was standing behind a large poster.

I was running to the next stop, but the road was icy and I was slipping once near the corner. A shop owner was watching from the doorway while I was catching my breath.

When the next bus arrived, it was full and was not opening the rear doors. Passengers were standing tightly and were not leaving space near the exit.

I was deciding to take the tram instead. On the tram platform I was searching for coins while the ticket machine was not accepting my note. Other travellers were waiting patiently behind me.

While I was buying a ticket at a shop nearby, the tram was leaving. I was standing on the pavement and was not believing my luck at that moment.

Finally I was calling a taxi. The driver was friendly and was asking about my appointment. We were driving through side streets while he was telling stories about winter traffic in our city.

I was arriving at the clinic ten minutes late. The receptionist was kind and was saying the dentist was still preparing the room. I was sitting in the waiting area and was reading old magazines.

Did the treatment hurt? It was not painful, but I was feeling embarrassed about the journey. The dentist was laughing when I explained about the bus and the tram.

After the appointment I was walking home slowly. Snow was falling lightly and children were playing in the park. I was not rushing because the day was already unusual enough.

Please tell Uncle Mark hello. I was remembering his story about missing a train in Dublin when I was waiting on the cold platform.

Love,
Nina
