The room was silent except for pens on paper. Marco was sitting near the window and was thinking hard about his first sentence. I was writing about the river park when a loud alarm rang through the whole school.
Ms Cole was standing up fast and was telling us to leave bags on the floor. We were lining up at the door while other classes were moving into the corridor. Teachers were guiding students toward the playground in an orderly line.
Outside, hundreds of students were standing in rows on the sports field. The principal was speaking into a microphone when fire engines arrived at the gate. We were waiting in the cold wind and watching red trucks near the main entrance.
Firefighters were entering the building while we were staying in our assigned zones. Ms Cole was counting names twice to make sure everyone was present. I was worried about my half-finished essay on the desk inside.
After twenty minutes an officer was announcing that the alarm was false. Someone was cooking in the staff room and smoke reached a sensor in the hall. We were laughing with relief when the principal explained the cause.
We were walking back to class when Marco was asking if the test would continue. Ms Cole was saying we would get ten extra minutes after the break. I was thinking about my lost ideas while we were climbing the stairs.
In the room windows were open and fresh air was moving through the curtains. We were sitting down again when the bell rang for a short break anyway. Students were talking loudly about the fire trucks in the street.
During the break I was drinking water in the yard with friends. Anna was describing the firefighters' helmets, and Tom was joking about burnt toast in the staff room. We were relaxing before the quiet writing hour returned.
When the test restarted, everyone was focusing more carefully than before. I was finishing my last paragraph about boats on the river when time ended. Ms Cole was collecting papers and was smiling because the class stayed calm.
That Monday mixed calm study with sudden noise in one lesson. We were writing, the alarm was ringing, and later we were completing our work with extra minutes and clearer minds. When I went home, I was tired, but proud of staying calm on a strange school day.
