During the first hour visitors were arriving slowly with coats and shopping bags. A baker was setting out bread samples while a musician was tuning a guitar on the small stage. I was directing people toward the craft room when an older man asked about wheelchair access.
At ten the fair grew louder. Children were painting flower pots in the art corner, and teens were serving tea from a long table by the window. I was explaining the map of stalls when a child dropped a cup and hot water spilled on the floor.
A cleaner was mopping the area while the child's mother was apologizing to nearby guests. I was fetching paper towels and was telling everyone the hall was safe again. Accidents happen quickly in busy rooms, but calm reactions help.
In the afternoon I was helping at the book stall when my friend Marco appeared with his camera. He was taking photos for the school newsletter while customers were browsing old novels and travel guides. We were talking about our history project when the fire alarm test surprised the building.
For thirty seconds lights were flashing and a recorded voice was giving instructions. Volunteers were opening doors while guests were walking to the marked assembly point in the yard. The manager was announcing that the test was planned, and people were returning inside with relieved smiles.
Later Ana was selling the last honey jars when rain started against the windows. Wind was shaking the sign above the door, but inside the room felt warm and dry. Dad was counting donations at a small desk while Mom was packing unsold crafts into labelled boxes.
At five o'clock we were tired but happy. Marco and I were sitting on the back steps with juice cartons while Ana was chatting with friends from her dance class. The musician was packing his guitar case when the last families were leaving through the side exit.
On the drive home we talked about next month's language café at the same centre. I was remembering moments from the day and was noticing how many tasks moved at once in one shared space. Mom said volunteering taught patience and teamwork better than any poster on the wall.
That Saturday mixed preparation, surprises, and small crises in a single public building. People were arriving, we were helping, alarms were testing, and rain was falling — yet the fair finished with full boxes for charity and new friends at the tea table.
