I am Emma. Yesterday after work my friend Jake and I sat in the campus café and compared our morning commutes. We both started at seven, but our routes and surprises were very different.

Jake: I was leaving my flat when I remembered I did not lock the window in the kitchen. I ran back upstairs and checked every room before I caught the tram at seven twelve.

Emma: I was already on the bus when you sent that message. I was reading notes for our meeting while an old man was telling stories to his granddaughter near the front seat.

Jake: On the tram I was standing near the doors when a tourist asked about the stop for the museum. I was explaining the route when we were stopping at a red light much longer than usual.

Emma: Traffic was bad on my side too. We were moving inch by inch near the hospital when a cyclist fell on wet leaves. Drivers were braking, and everyone was looking out of the windows.

Jake: When I changed to the metro, a singer was playing guitar on the platform. People were dropping coins into his case while trains were arriving every four minutes. I was listening for one song, then I was rushing because my transfer window was short.

Emma: I got off the bus ten minutes late and was walking fast across the park. Birds were singing in the trees, but I was not enjoying the morning because my shoes were still wet from a puddle near the gate.

Jake: I was entering the office building when the elevator stopped between floors for five minutes. Three of us were talking quietly until maintenance staff fixed the problem. I was arriving at my desk at eight forty instead of eight thirty.

Emma: I was opening the seminar room when Professor Cole was already writing on the board. Other students were taking seats and were opening laptops. I was apologizing for being late, but she was smiling and started the introduction anyway.

Jake: At lunch I was telling coworkers about the stuck elevator. One colleague was saying she was cycling when a bus splashed water on her coat. Another was laughing because his coffee spilled when a tram braked suddenly.

Emma: We were agreeing that city mornings never repeat exactly. Some days you are waiting, some days you are running, and sometimes strangers are helping with directions or music on a platform.

Jake: This morning I was leaving early on purpose. I was walking part of the way to avoid the elevator, and the air was cold but clear. I did not miss the tram, and I did not forget the kitchen window.

Emma: I was cycling today for the first time this month. I was feeling nervous at busy corners, but I was arriving before eight with dry shoes. Maybe our commute stories will sound calmer next week.

We were finishing our tea when the café owner was closing shutters for the evening.
