I am Amir. My wife Lina and I moved into our flat above the bookshop twelve months ago. Last week we sat by the window and talked about the year we didn't expect to pass so quickly.

We didn't know the neighbours well on the first day. Did the bookshop owner welcome us? Yes, he did, with a small plant for the kitchen. Did we hear traffic at night? Yes, we did at first, but we didn't complain after two weeks.

Spring didn't bring big renovations. We didn't paint every wall immediately. Did we fix the loose shelf in the hall? Yes, we did, with help from Lina's brother. Did he stay for dinner? Yes, he did, and he didn't leave before nine.

In summer we didn't travel abroad because work schedules didn't match. Did we explore parks near the river instead? Yes, we did, almost every Sunday. Did we invite friends for balcony tea? Yes, we did, when the weather didn't turn cold.

Autumn felt busy. Lina didn't change jobs, but she did start an evening course twice a week. Did I cook more often on those nights? Yes, I did, and I didn't repeat the same soup every time.

Winter arrived with short days. We didn't always leave the flat after work. Did we read more books from the shop downstairs? Yes, we did. Did the owner recommend novels we didn't know? Yes, he did, and we didn't return them late.

When the anniversary came, we didn't organize a party. Did we buy a simple cake? Yes, we did. Did we take photos on the balcony? Yes, we did, although wind didn't help the candles.

We didn't solve every small problem in one year. The bathroom tap didn't stop dripping until March, and we didn't replace the old rug until November. Did we feel at home anyway? Yes, we did, long before the year ended.

Looking back, we didn't measure happiness by perfect plans. Didn't questions and did answers appear in our daily talks? Yes, they did, when we asked who forgot keys or when we last cleaned the windows.

We didn't know what the second year would bring. Did we want to stay in the flat? Yes, we did. We didn't need a bigger place yet, and we didn't forget why we chose the street with the bookshop in the first place.
