December here is colder than December in my hometown. The wind near the river feels sharper than the sea breeze I knew as a child. My roommate Sofia says her mountains are snowier than our campus fields, but the campus paths are icier than the roads in her village.
Last week we looked at weather charts on the dorm wall. Monday was cloudier than Tuesday, but Tuesday was windier than any day that week. Sofia said the coldest morning was colder than her freezer at home, and we laughed while we drank hot tea.
We compared coats in the hallway. My jacket is thicker than Sofia's light parka, but her scarf is longer than mine and looks warmer around her neck. Our friend Ben said his boots are heavier than our shoes, yet they are better than thin trainers on icy steps.
In the cafeteria we talked about soup. The tomato soup today is hotter than yesterday's soup, and the bread rolls are fresher than the rolls from the campus shop. Sofia thinks the cafeteria coffee is stronger than the coffee from the machine on our floor.
After classes we studied in the library. The study room on the third floor is quieter than the ground floor, but the ground floor is brighter than the upper rooms in the afternoon. Ben said the librarian on duty is more helpful than the assistant who worked on Friday.
We planned a trip home for the holiday. Train tickets to my town are more expensive than bus tickets, but the train is faster than the bus on winter roads. Sofia said the bus journey to her home is longer than my train ride, yet the scenery is more beautiful than the motorway view.
On Saturday we walked to the market. The apples from the farm stall were sweeter than the apples in the supermarket last week. The market stalls are smaller than the big store, but the sellers are friendlier than the checkout staff we usually meet.
In the evening we watched the sky from the dorm window. The sunset was shorter than the sunsets at home, but the colours were deeper than I expected in a city. Sofia said the stars are harder to see here than in her mountain village because the street lights are brighter than the lamps back home.
Before bed Ben sent a message to the group chat. He wrote that winter training is tougher than summer training, but our team spirit is stronger than last semester. I agreed and added that sharing stories makes this city feel warmer than the numbers on the thermometer.
Life here is colder than in my hometown, yet I am learning that new places can feel closer when friends compare small details with open smiles. Sofia says spring
