Comparativos y superlativos en inglés: -er / -est, more / most

Para comparar dos cosas se usa el comparativo con **than**: My brother is **taller than** me (Mi hermano es más alto que yo). Para elegir lo más alto de un grupo se usa el superlativo con **the**: He is **the tallest** in the family.

La regla básica

Adjetivo corto: -er y the -est (tall - taller - the tallest). Adjetivo largo: more y the most (expensive - more expensive - the most expensive). Para comparar dos se usa than; para «el más» de un grupo, the más in u of.

Adjetivos largos: more y the most

beautifulmore beautifulthe most beautiful
comfortablemore comfortablethe most comfortable

Los adjetivos de tres sílabas o más llevan more / the most.

Formas irregulares

AdjetivoComparativoSuperlativo
goodbetterthe best
badworsethe worst
farfurther / fartherthe furthest / the farthest

Con good y bad no hay «más bueno»: *more good no existe, se dice better, y *the most good tampoco, se dice the best. Otra diferencia: «que» se traduce siempre por than, nunca por that. Y «el más alto de la clase» es the tallest in the class: con un grupo en singular se usa in, no «de».

Ejemplos

  • My sister is older than me. Mi hermana es mayor que yo.
  • This phone is more expensive than that one. Este teléfono es más caro que aquel.
  • Tomorrow will be colder than today. Mañana hará más frío que hoy.
  • The book was better than the film. El libro era mejor que la película.
  • Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
  • Anna is the youngest in our family.
  • Yesterday was the worst day of the week.
  • Kate is as tall as her mother. Kate es tan alta como su madre.
  • The bus is not as fast as the train.

Than: comparar dos cosas

El comparativo casi siempre va con than: He is taller than his father. Después de than puedes decir me, him, her: She is older than me. No confundas than con then (luego).

The + superlativo: in y of

Si el grupo es un lugar o una comunidad en singular, se usa in: in the world, in our class, in my family, in Spain. Si lo que sigue es un número, all o un plural, se usa of: of all, of the three, of my friends. Con posesivo no se pone the: my best friend, our biggest problem, no *my the best friend.

As ... as: igual que

Para decir que algo es igual se usa as + adjetivo + as (tan ... como): Kate is as tall as her mother. El adjetivo no cambia. La negación es not as ... as: The bus is not as fast as the train. Not so ... as también es correcto. Ojo: en afirmativa no se dice *so tall as.

  • My brother is more tall than me. My brother is taller than me. Adjetivo corto: -er, no more.
  • This film is more good than that one. This film is better than that one. good tiene su propia forma: better.
  • She is taller that me. She is taller than me. «Que» en una comparación es than, no that.
  • He is the more tall boy. He is the tallest boy. «El más alto» es the tallest; no se usa the more con adjetivo corto.
  • She is the tallest of the class. She is the tallest in the class.
  • This is the most good cafe. This is the best cafe. good - better - best.
  • She is tallest in the class. She is the tallest in the class.
  • Kate is so tall as her mother. Kate is as tall as her mother. En afirmativa «tan ... como» es as ... as.

Preguntas y respuestas

¿Cuándo uso -er y cuándo more?

Los largos llevan more: more expensive, more interesting.

¿Cuándo uso in y cuándo of con el superlativo?

In va con un lugar o grupo en singular: in the world, in my family. Of va con un número, all o un plural: of all, of the three.

¿Puedo decir not so ... as?

Sí. The bus is not so fast as the train y The bus is not as fast as the train son correctas las dos.
