Preposiciones de tiempo: at, on, in

En español dices «a las siete», «el lunes» y «en mayo»; en inglés eliges entre **at** (hora exacta), **on** (día y fecha) e **in** (periodos más largos). The lesson starts **at** nine, I have a test **on** Monday, we go to the sea **in** July.

A2 Conectores ·

La regla principal

at = un momento concreto (at seven, at noon, at night). on = un día o una fecha (on Monday, on 5 May, on my birthday). in = un periodo más largo: parte del día, mes, estación, año (in the morning, in May, in summer, in 2019).

Tres preposiciones, tres tamaños de tiempo

PreposiciónCon qué se usaEjemplos

ondías de la semana, fechas, fiestas de un día, día + parte del díaon Monday, on Mondays, on 5 May, on my birthday, on Christmas Day, on Friday evening
inpartes del día, meses, estaciones, años, décadasin the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in May, in summer, in 2019, in the 1990s

«A las siete» es at seven, no *in the seven. «En mayo», «en verano» y «en 2020» sí coinciden con el español: in May, in summer, in 2020.

Ojo con «por la mañana», «por la tarde» y «por la noche» (o «en la noche» en Latinoamérica). En inglés es in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, pero at night. No traduzcas «por» como *for ni *by.

  • I get up at seven in the morning.

Sin preposición: last, next, every, this, tomorrow

Delante de last, next, every, this y de las palabras tomorrow, yesterday, today y tonight no se usa preposición: last Monday, next week, every day, this evening, tomorrow afternoon, yesterday morning, tonight.

  • I saw him last Friday. Lo vi el viernes pasado.
  • We are going to move next year.
  • I go for a run every morning. Salgo a correr todas las mañanas.
  • I will call you tomorrow afternoon. Te llamaré mañana por la tarde.

Tres contrastes que se confunden

In the morning es la mañana en general. Si añades el día, la preposición cambia a on: on Monday morning. Es decir: I get up early in the morning, pero I had a test on Monday morning. Lo mismo con on Friday evening o on Sunday afternoon.

In May, pero on 5 May: el mes es un periodo (in) y la fecha concreta es un día (on). Mes y año juntos siguen con in: in May 2020.

At night, pero in the evening: night es un caso especial: en sentido general («por la noche») se dice at night, sin the. Para una noche concreta con día se usa on: on Saturday night.

Inglés británico y americano

Para el fin de semana, en Reino Unido se dice at the weekend y en EE. UU. on the weekend.

Preguntas y respuestas

¿Cuándo uso at, on e in con el tiempo?

At con horas exactas (at six, at noon, at night), on con días y fechas (on Friday, on 5 May) e in con periodos más largos (in the morning, in May, in summer, in 2019).

¿Por qué se dice in the morning pero on Monday morning?

Cuando nombras un día concreto, la preposición va con el día, no con la parte del día, así que se usa on: on Monday morning, on Friday evening. Sin día se queda in: in the morning.

No. Se dice next week, last year, every day, tomorrow morning, yesterday y tonight, sin in ni on.

¿Cómo se dice «el fin de semana»?

En Reino Unido, at the weekend; en EE. UU., on the weekend. Las dos formas son correctas.
