In the morning I arrive at eight forty-five and switch on the lights. At nine sharp I unlock the door for the first customers. On Monday mornings students come at nine fifteen after their bus arrives at the station.
At lunchtime I eat a sandwich at twelve thirty in the staff room at the back. On busy days I eat quickly at twelve and return to the till at twelve twenty. In December many people shop at midday on their break from work.
On the first day of each month we change the window display at seven before opening. In January we show winter novels and hot drink books. On Valentine week in February hearts appear on shelves at the front.
At Easter we sell picture books for children on the table near the door. Families visit on Good Friday at eleven and on Easter Monday at two. In spring sunshine people browse outside at the bench at four.
At summer sales in July we open early at eight thirty on Fridays. On Saturday in August tourists arrive at ten and stay until five. In August the town is busy at night when music plays in the square at eight.
On September fifth school lists bring parents at nine in the morning. Teachers recommend dictionaries on the first week of term. In autumn evenings readers return at six after work to choose new stories.
At Halloween on October thirty-first we decorate at seven in the evening. Children in costumes visit at five on their way home from parties. In November rain makes the shop feel cosy at four when lamps glow at the windows.
At Christmas we stay open late at eight on December twenty-third. On Christmas Eve we close at three in the afternoon. In the last week of the year gifts sell fast at noon and again at five.
On New Year day the shop is quiet at eleven when only a few walkers pass. In January sales start on the second and prices drop at the start of the month. At the end of January we count stock at six after closing.
At present I train a new helper on Tuesday at two. She learns the till at three and shelve books at four. On her first Friday she works alone at nine while I take lunch at twelve in the café next door.
Our regular customer Mr Ellis visits at ten on Thursday and at eleven on Saturday. He buys one novel in the month of May and two in winter at Christmas. On his birthday in June he always chooses poetry at two in the afternoon.
Time prepositions guide every hour at the shop from opening at nine to closing at six. In the evening I lock up at six fifteen and walk home at six thirty.
