We arrive at the station at two in the afternoon on the first day. The owner said she would meet us at three at the gate with keys. On Saturday morning we want to swim at ten when the water feels warm near the shallow end.
In the morning on weekdays we usually work at the office until five. On this trip we hope to sleep until eight and eat breakfast at nine on the terrace. In July the sun stays bright at six in the evening above the hills across the water.
Alex checked ferry times because we travel on Sunday at eleven from the mainland. The return boat leaves at four on the following Sunday in the late afternoon. At the harbour we buy tickets at ten forty-five before boarding at eleven sharp.
On the second day we plan a walk at eight before heat rises at midday. In the forest path near the cottage birds sing at dawn and again at dusk. On Wednesday we might rent bicycles at nine from a shop in the village ten minutes away.
The cottage kitchen has pans and plates, so we cook at home on most evenings. On Friday we eat at the local restaurant at seven and walk back at nine under quiet stars. In the village square music sometimes plays at eight on summer nights.
I packed light clothes for days at the beach and a jacket for evenings at the pier. On rainy days in July we read at the window at four and drink tea at five. In the cottage diary previous guests wrote kind notes at the end of each stay.
Before we leave home we stop mail at the post office on the last working day. Our neighbour agreed to water plants at six on Monday and Thursday while we are away. On the morning of travel we set the alarm at five thirty and leave home at six fifteen.
At the cottage we want to rest, swim, and forget city noise at rush hour. On the fifteenth we finally arrive at four after a long drive and open windows at five. In July this place feels peaceful at night when crickets sing outside the door.
Our friends Tom and Sara may visit on the twentieth for one night. They can take the train at nine and reach us at eleven thirty with lunch in a bag. On that evening we will sit outside at eight and share stories until ten at the latest.
I believe this holiday on the lake in mid-July will give us energy for autumn work. At the end of the trip we photograph the view at sunset on our last evening.
