I left home at five thirty this morning because the drive to the coast takes four hours. On Friday traffic is lighter at six on the motorway than at eight. In autumn fog often sits on the fields at dawn near the bridge outside our town.
I stopped for coffee at seven at a service station on the main road. On long trips I always pause at that hour before hunger arrives at nine. In the shop I bought fruit and water for the rest of the day at the counter near the door.
At nine thirty I reached the hills where leaves turn gold in October light. On the viewpoint path tourists take photos at ten when sun breaks through cloud. In the valley below a river shines at midday like a silver line between trees.
At twelve I ate lunch in a village café on the square next to the old church. On the menu soup tasted perfect at noon after cold air at the window seat. In the afternoon I walked at two along the cliff path above the sea.
On Saturday I plan to visit a lighthouse open at eleven on weekends only. Tickets sell at the gate at ten forty-five before the guided tour at eleven. In winter the site closes at four, but in October it stays open until five at sunset.
Tonight I sleep at a hostel near the harbour where boats return at six from fishing trips. On the deck at eight I heard gulls and soft waves at the pier. In the dorm someone played guitar at nine until quiet hour at ten at night.
Sunday morning I will drive home at seven to avoid queues at the toll station at noon. On the calendar next month I marked another trip on the third when friends join me. In November days grow short at four, yet roads stay clear at seven in the morning.
This journey at dawn on an autumn Friday reminded me why I love slow travel. At each stop time felt generous, not rushed like meetings at the office at three. In the diary I will keep these hours as small anchors of peace.
