I moved to the new flat on the third of this month and life already feels different. Boxes still sit in the hallway, but the kitchen works and I cooked pasta at seven last night. On the first evening neighbours knocked at eight with a welcome cake.
My job starts early, so I wake at six and leave at seven fifteen for the tram. On Monday the commute took longer because roadworks began at six near the bridge. In the morning rush I read messages on the train at seven forty until we arrive at eight ten.
The office is friendly and people eat together at noon in the canteen on the ground floor. On Friday we sometimes go out at one to a sandwich shop on Market Lane. In the afternoon I focus better at my desk at three when meetings end.
At the weekend I explore the area because shops open at nine on Saturday near the river. On Sunday I sleep until nine and clean one room at a time in the flat. In October I want to buy curtains at the store on High Street before evenings grow dark at five.
I joined a yoga class on Tuesday at seven at the community hall five streets away. The teacher speaks softly and we finish at eight fifteen with tea at the door. In November the course continues on the same day at the same hour unless holidays change the plan.
Remember you promised to visit on the twentieth when your course ends at four. We can cook together at six and watch a film at eight in the small living room. In December your room stays ready with clean sheets on the bed near the window.
I miss Sunday lunches at your house at one with soup and bread on the long table. Here I am learning new rhythms, but your letters at the start of each month make me feel close. On rainy days I think of your garden at four when you cut roses before tea.
Write soon and tell me when your train arrives at the station on visit day. I will meet you at the exit at five with an umbrella if sky looks grey at three.
