Rosa called Tom in the morning and asked him to arrive at one o'clock. She told him to bring Ana because she wanted to welcome her properly. Tom said he would drive them both in his small red car.
When they arrived, Rosa hugged him and shook hands with Ana. She showed her the garden and told her to sit wherever she felt comfortable. Tom placed flowers on the table that he bought for Rosa on the way.
During lunch Rosa asked Ana about her work at the hospital. Ana explained her schedule and told us about the kind nurses who trained her last year. Rosa listened and asked her to pass the bread when the soup arrived.
Tom told Rosa he would help her wash the dishes after the meal. She thanked him but said her neighbour would visit later and could assist her. The neighbour often helped Rosa when heavy pots needed moving.
After soup we ate chicken with rice and salad. Rosa asked me to pour juice for everyone at the table. I filled four glasses and placed them near each person carefully.
Ana complimented Rosa's cooking and asked her for the recipe. Rosa wrote it for her on a small card and told her to call if any step was unclear. Tom photographed the card so Ana would not lose it.
While we ate, Tom's phone rang. His friend Mark called him about football tickets for Sunday. Tom stepped outside to talk to him for two minutes and then returned to us smiling.
Rosa asked Tom to tell Mark she said hello. Tom promised he would pass her message when he saw Mark at the match. Ana laughed and said she would join them if Tom bought her a ticket too.
After lunch Rosa showed Ana old family photos in the living room. She pointed to Tom as a baby and told Ana stories about his first steps. Tom pretended to hide, but we all laughed and pulled him back to the sofa.
Rosa also invited her friend Irene to coffee at four. She asked me to stay and meet Irene because she wrote books for children. Irene arrived with two copies and signed one for me with a kind note inside.
Before Tom and Ana left, Rosa packed cake for them in a tin box. She told Ana to enjoy it with tea on Sunday evening. Tom hugged Rosa and thanked her for a wonderful afternoon with all of us.
On the way home Tom texted Rosa to say they arrived safely. Ana sent her a photo of the cake on a blue plate by the window. Rosa replied and told them she already missed them a little.
The next day Rosa called me and asked me what I thought of Ana.
