This morning I realized nobody told Julia about the surprise party we planned for Friday. I felt terrible because she is my closest friend in the office and always includes me in her plans.
At lunch I asked Marco if he remembered to invite her. He looked surprised and said he thought Sara had called her yesterday. Sara shook her head and told us she left a message on Julia's home phone, but Julia changed her number last month.
I decided to fix the problem before afternoon tea. I texted Julia and asked her to meet me after work near the bookshop on River Street. I did not mention the party because I wanted the surprise to stay secret.
Julia replied quickly and said she could meet me at five thirty. She asked me to bring the scarf she lent me because she wanted to wear it at her cousin's wedding on Sunday. I put the scarf in my bag and walked to the shop ten minutes early.
When Julia arrived, she hugged me and asked why I looked nervous. I laughed and told her the truth: our team planned a small party for her birthday on Friday and we almost forgot to tell her the cover story for the meeting room booking.
Julia covered her mouth and started laughing too. She said she wondered why everyone whispered near the printer all week. She thanked me for telling her and promised she would act surprised on Friday anyway.
We sat in the café and wrote a list of friends to confirm. Julia asked me to call Ahmed because he travels on Thursdays and might miss the event. I promised I would call him tonight and send him the address.
She also asked me to remind Lina about the cake order. Lina offered to pick up the cake on Friday morning, but she needed the final flavour choice. Julia chose lemon and told me to pass the message before noon tomorrow.
On Tuesday Marco sent a group message and asked us to bring decorations after work on Thursday. Sara replied that she would bring lights and told him to borrow tape from the supply cupboard on the second floor.
Wednesday felt calmer. Julia thanked each colleague quietly when they confirmed plans at her desk. Our manager approved the early finish on Friday and asked us to clean the room before we left for the weekend.
Thursday evening we decorated the meeting room while Julia waited downstairs with Ahmed, who told her he needed help choosing a gift online. The trick worked because she did not suspect the lights behind the closed door.
Friday at four thirty we shouted surprise when Julia entered the room. She clapped her hands and hugged us one by one. She told Marco she loved the banner and thanked Sara for the playlist that ran all afternoon.
Before we cut the cake, Julia stood up and thanked everyone for remembering her. She said small teams feel like family when people look out for each other.
