I am Maya. Yesterday my partner Jon and I moved into a new flat on Oak Street after three weeks of packing boxes in our old studio. The landlord met us at nine with keys and a folder of instructions for the heating system and recycling bins.

Jon asked him to show us the fuse box in the hall cupboard because the kitchen light flickered during the viewing last month. The landlord opened the cupboard, tested the switch, and said an electrician would visit on Tuesday if the problem returned.

Our friends Luis and Ana arrived at ten with a van full of plants and kitchen boxes. Luis carried the heavy pots up the stairs and Ana told us to label each box with a room name so unpacking would go faster. Jon thanked them and promised coffee once we found the kettle.

In the living room we pushed the sofa toward the window to catch the afternoon light. I asked Jon to hold the other end because the corridor was narrow and the wall paint was still fresh. A drop of paint stuck to his sleeve, but he laughed and said it matched the blue curtains Ana brought as a gift.

Ana hung the curtains while Luis assembled a bookshelf near the desk. He asked me to pass the screwdriver from the tool bag by the door. I searched five minutes before I found it under wrapping paper and handed it to him with relief.

At noon the neighbour from flat four knocked and introduced herself as Mrs Chen. She welcomed us to the building and asked us to sign the intercom list in the entrance hall. She also told us the bakery on the corner opened at seven and made good rolls on Sundays.

Mrs Chen noticed our empty fridge and said she could lend us milk until the supermarket delivery arrived at four. Jon offered to walk to the shop for her if she needed anything else, but she smiled and said her son would visit that evening with groceries.

After lunch Luis and Ana helped us hang two pictures above the sofa. Ana stepped back, looked at the wall, and asked me to move the left frame a little higher. I adjusted it carefully while Jon cleaned dust from the floor where boxes had sat all morning.

The delivery driver called at three forty-five and asked Jon to meet him at the rear entrance because the front street was closed for repairs. Jon went downstairs and guided him to our door. The driver helped us place the fridge in the kitchen and asked us to wait two hours before switching it on.

By six the flat looked lived-in rather than empty. We found plates, made pasta, and sat on the sofa while light faded over the rooftops. Luis texted us later and asked us to send a photo when we finished the basic setup. I took a picture of the living room and sent it with a note of thanks.
