I am Elena. My husband Marco and I have lived in Brighton for three years. We moved here after Marco had finished his contract in Manchester. Since that day our daily rhythm has changed completely.
We have rented a flat near the seafront since April 2022. The building has looked the same since the nineteenth century, but the interior has felt new to us. We have painted every room twice because the salt air has damaged the walls quickly.
Marco has worked remotely since the move. He has attended video meetings from our kitchen table every weekday morning. Before we arrived here, he had never seen the ocean from his office window.
I have been teaching at a language school since September. I have met students from twelve countries, and many of them have stayed in Brighton for years. One student has lived here since childhood, and she has always spoken English with a local accent.
Our neighbour Mrs Hughes has known this street for forty years. She has watched the promenade change since the old pier closed. She has told us stories about storms that had flooded the lower road before the new barriers were built.
Since we unpacked our boxes, we have explored the cliffs on foot every weekend. We have discovered small cafes that have served the same family recipes for generations. Marco has taken hundreds of photos because the light has looked different in every season.
Have we regretted leaving Manchester? No, we have not regretted it at all. We had saved money for two years before we made the decision. That preparation has given us confidence since the first month here.
Our daughter Sofia has grown taller since last spring. She has made friends at the primary school near our flat. She has been learning to swim in the community pool since January, and she has already passed her first badge test.
The local market has opened on Saturdays since we arrived. Vendors have sold fresh fish that fishermen had caught before dawn. I have bought herbs there every week, and Marco has cooked seafood dishes he had never tried before the move.
We have joined a book club since October. Members have read novels set in coastal towns around Europe. Last month we discussed a story in which a character had returned home after twenty years abroad.
Since winter ended, tourists have filled the beach on sunny days. The city has felt lively again, and shop owners have welcomed the season with bright window displays. We have enjoyed the energy even when the streets have become crowded.
Marco had worried about isolation before we left Manchester. That worry has disappeared since he has found a running group by the sea. He has been training for a half marathon since March, and he has already completed two long practice runs.
