Learning guitar: perfect continuous (B1)

I am Priya. I have been learning guitar since last January, and the experience has changed how I spend my evenings. Before I started, I had never held an instrument for more than a few minutes.

My teacher Tom has taught beginners for fifteen years. He has worked with students who had quit other hobbies before they had found music. Since our first lesson he has encouraged me to practice slowly and consistently.

I have practiced for thirty minutes almost every day. Some weeks I have played more because I have had free time after work. Other weeks I have struggled because meetings have filled my calendar until late evening.

Tom has shown me chords that had seemed impossible at first. I have repeated finger positions until my hands have remembered them without thinking. He has said progress often arrives after periods when nothing has felt easy.

Have I performed in front of people yet? Yes, I have played at two small gatherings since summer. I had felt terrified before the first song, but friends have told me the rhythm has improved noticeably since April.

My roommate Leila has listened to my practice sessions since February. She has been patient even when I have played the same verse twenty times. She has even learned lyrics to songs I have chosen for my repertoire.

Since autumn I have been recording short clips on my phone. Listening back, I have heard mistakes I had not noticed while playing. That habit has helped me correct timing problems I had repeated for weeks.

Tom has introduced pieces that have combined strumming and simple melody lines. One folk song has used patterns I had studied separately before he had joined them in a single exercise. Since then my transitions have become smoother.

I have bought a better tuner since my old device had stopped working. I have also replaced strings that had sounded dull after months of use. Small maintenance tasks have kept the instrument ready whenever inspiration has appeared.

My colleagues have known about my hobby since I had brought the guitar case to the office once. Since that day they have asked whether I have written original songs. I have composed two short pieces, though I have not shared them publicly yet.

Learning music has affected my mood in ways I had not predicted. I have felt calmer after difficult days because playing has required full attention. Stress has faded while my fingers have moved across the frets.

I have watched online tutorials that have explained techniques Tom had mentioned in passing. Some teachers have demonstrated styles I have wanted to explore after I have mastered the basics. My playlist has grown longer every month.

Since December I have been preparing for a student recital at Tom's studio. I have rehearsed my chosen piece until I have known every chord change by heart. Nerves have returned, but preparation has reduced the fear I had felt earlier.

Friends have asked how long I have been studying.
