Perfecto vs pasado simple: comidas en casa (B1)

I am Rosa. My flatmates and I share a small kitchen, and mealtimes often start arguments about tense as well as about dishes. Today is Saturday, and our group chat shows how present perfect and past simple live beside each other in one hungry household.

We have already eaten breakfast. Ben cooked eggs at nine, and I have washed the pan. Mia has cleared the table, yet she has not taken the bin out. That chore can wait, but yesterday we forgot rubbish day entirely, and the hallway smelled until evening.

Yesterday was different. We skipped lunch because we slept through noon. Ben woke at two, looked at the clock, and said we missed the market bread stall. Last night we ordered pizza instead. I ate three slices and felt guilty, but I have not weighed myself since Monday.

This week Mia has tried a new soup recipe every evening. She has bought lentils, carrots, and spices from the corner shop. On Tuesday she made spicy tomato soup, and we finished the pot before eight. Last Wednesday she burned garlic, yet she has improved since then. Yesterday she simmered beans for an hour, and the flat smelled warm all afternoon.

Ben has never liked cooking alone. Last year he lived with his parents, and his mother prepared every meal. Since he moved in with us in September he has learned to fry onions without fear. Last month he dropped a plate, but he has not broken anything since that accident.

I have drunk too much coffee this morning. I have had two cups already, and it is only ten o'clock. Yesterday I drank tea in the afternoon because coffee kept me awake at midnight. Ben has warned me about sleep, yet I have ignored his advice twice this week.

Our neighbour Ana knocked yesterday at six. She has just returned from Portugal, and she has brought us pasteis in a paper box. We ate two each while she described Lisbon streets. She visited the city in April during a work trip. She has loved the light there since her first evening walk.

When we plan meals, I ask what we have done today and what we did yesterday. Have we eaten yet uses present perfect because the day continues. We skipped lunch yesterday uses past simple because that Thursday noon is finished. I have already eaten links hunger now to an earlier action. We ordered pizza last night closes the story at a clock time.

Mia wrote a note on the fridge: We have finished the milk. Buy more before Sunday. Ben replied underneath: I bought oat milk yesterday after work. Both notes are useful. One warns about today. One records a completed errand.

At lunch today Ben asked, "Have you ever cooked for ten people?" I said I have catered one family party, but I cooked for six, not ten. Last Christmas I prepared roast vegetables and soup. Since then I have avoided large guest lists. Yesterday's skipped lunch feels far away now because we have eaten well this morning.
