Childhood friends: Present Perfect (B1)

I am Lucas. Some friendships have lasted longer than jobs, houses, or hobbies. I have known my closest friends since childhood, and those bonds have shaped how I see loyalty and trust.

I have known Marco since we were five. We have shared classrooms, football teams, and awkward teenage phases. Marco has moved to Leeds for work, yet we have spoken every week and have met in person several times each year.

I have known Sofia since primary school as well. She has studied architecture in Milan, and I have admired her drawings on social media. When she has visited Bristol, we have walked by the harbour and have remembered teachers who have encouraged us.

Tom and I have played music together since secondary school. We have formed a band that has never become famous, but we have enjoyed rehearsals in garages and community halls. Tom has written lyrics I have still remembered after many years.

Our group has supported one another through difficult moments. When Marco has lost his grandfather, we have travelled to the funeral together. When Sofia has felt homesick abroad, we have sent voice messages that have cheered her up.

We have celebrated successes too. I have passed my driving test, and they have organised a small party. Sofia has won a design award, and we have toasted her achievement with cheap sparkling wine in her favourite café.

Recently we have started a shared online album. Each of us has uploaded photos from different decades, and comments have made us laugh until late at night. Technology has helped us stay close even when schedules have clashed.

We have disagreed sometimes, yet we have always repaired misunderstandings. Honest conversations have mattered more than winning arguments. I have learned that long friendships have required patience as well as fun.

People have asked whether childhood friends have stayed relevant in adult life. For us the answer has remained yes. Shared history has created a language only we have fully understood, and that connection has felt rare and valuable.

I have made new friends at work and in my neighbourhood, and those relationships have enriched my daily routine. Still, the friends I have known since childhood have remained anchors when life has changed quickly. I have felt grateful for every year we have kept in touch.
