Hostel travel stories: Present Perfect (B1)

Hostel reception has handed me a room key and a map of the old town. In the shared kitchen tonight, travellers from four continents have gathered around a long wooden table with pasta, cheap wine, and unfinished stories.

A woman from Chile has described Patagonia. She has hiked trails her guidebook has not mentioned, and she has slept under stars that have looked brighter than city lights. Her camera has captured glaciers she has wanted to share online later.

A student from Warsaw has talked about Erasmus in Lisbon. He has learned Portuguese phrases in markets, and he has missed his grandmother's soup during rainy weeks. Still, he has called the semester the richest period of his life so far.

I have listened and have added my own experiences. I have volunteered on a farm in Portugal, and I have taught English in a village school for one month. Those weeks have taught me patience more than any textbook has done.

Someone has asked whether I have ever travelled alone. I have answered yes, and I have explained how solo trips have forced me to speak with strangers. Hostels like this one have become places where introductions have happened naturally over breakfast.

The conversation has shifted to food. An Italian traveller has cooked sauce from tomatoes he has bought at a morning market. We have passed bowls and have laughed when a French guest has corrected his pronunciation playfully.

Later we have planned a walking tour for tomorrow. A local volunteer has offered to show hidden courtyards tourists have often missed. Several of us have agreed to meet at nine, and we have exchanged numbers before lights have gone out.

Not every journey has been easy. One backpacker has mentioned a stolen wallet in Barcelona, yet kind strangers have helped him reach the embassy. His story has reminded us that problems have appeared, but support has appeared too.

By midnight the kitchen has grown quiet. Plates have been washed, and routes have been folded into pockets. I have felt grateful for voices I have heard only once but have remembered clearly.

Travel has not meant escaping responsibility. It has meant collecting perspectives that have widened my understanding of ordinary courage. Before I sleep, I have written a short note about tonight because moments like this have felt worth keeping.
