Have been learning English: PPC (B1)

I am Diego. I live in Valencia and I work in a hotel near the beach. Three years ago I decided to improve my English because international guests have been visiting our city more often every season.

Since then I have been learning English in the evenings after my shifts. I have been attending a community class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I have been practicing listening with podcasts during my commute on the tram.

My teacher says I have been making steady progress with everyday conversations. I have been studying vocabulary related to travel, food, and directions because those topics appear constantly at the front desk. I have been writing new phrases in a notebook I carry in my uniform pocket.

At work I have been using English with guests who have been staying for conferences and festivals. Some colleagues have been helping me when difficult questions appear on the phone. I have been feeling more confident since I started speaking without translating every sentence in my head.

I have been reading graded articles online every weekend. I have been highlighting expressions I have been hearing repeatedly in guest requests. When I find a useful pattern, I have been repeating it quietly before I use it with real visitors.

My friend Ana has been learning French, but we have been comparing study habits over coffee on Sundays. She has been using flashcards while I have been focusing on longer reading texts. We have been encouraging each other because both languages have been opening doors at work.

For the last six months I have been preparing for a B1 exam my employer has been sponsoring. I have been completing practice tests that show how long I have been working on each skill area. Grammar has been improving, though I have been spending extra time on past tenses that confuse me sometimes.

Guests often ask how long I have been studying English. I tell them I have been learning seriously for three years, and I have been enjoying the process more since I started connecting language with people rather than only with textbooks.

My manager has been noticing fewer misunderstandings at reception. She has been assigning me more international bookings because I have been handling emails with fewer errors. I have been proud of that change even when busy days have been tiring.

Outside work I have been watching series with English subtitles. I have been pausing scenes to write down idioms characters have been using in casual speech. That habit has been helping me sound natural when guests have been joking with me in the lobby.

I have been planning a short trip to Dublin next year to test my skills in a full English environment. I have been saving money monthly and have been reading travel blogs written by students who have been studying abroad for one semester.

Language learning has been changing how I see my career. I have been meeting people I would not have spoken to before, and I have been discovering that patience matters as much as talent.
