Welcome back to Small Steps, the show about everyday change. I am your host, Riley, and today I am talking about habits I have been building this year without waiting for a perfect moment to start.
In January I have been waking fifteen minutes earlier to stretch before breakfast. I have been noticing less stiffness on days when I have been keeping that routine, even though I have been tempted to skip when weather has been cold.
I have been cooking more meals at home since March. Meal kits have been helping on busy Tuesdays, but weekends I have been experimenting with soups friends have been recommending online. My grocery bills have been falling slowly, which has been surprising me pleasantly.
Socially I have been calling one old friend each week instead of only liking posts online. Those conversations have been lasting longer than I expected, and I have been remembering details about their lives I had been missing when contact has been limited to quick messages.
At work I have been blocking focus time on my calendar. Colleagues have been respecting those blocks more often since I have been explaining them clearly in team meetings. Deep work sessions have been becoming easier when notifications have been silenced for an hour.
I have been reading before sleep rather than scrolling feeds. Library apps have been making borrowing simple, and I have been finishing one book monthly for the first time in years. Quiet pages have been helping my mind slow down at night.
Creatively I have been journaling three lines each evening about something that went well. That practice has been shifting attention toward progress I have been overlooking when days have been feeling repetitive.
Not every habit has been sticking permanently. I tried learning ukulele in spring and have been practicing less lately because evenings have been filling with other priorities. That is fine; I have been learning to adjust without guilt.
If you have been building habits this year, celebrate consistency over perfection. Small actions you have been repeating quietly often matter more than dramatic resolutions you have been abandoning by February.
Thanks for listening. Next week a guest has been joining me to talk about walking routes she has been exploring in her city since retirement. Until then, keep taking small steps.
