Good morning, class. I am Ms Patel, and today we will read a short guide I wrote for choosing present perfect or past simple. Keep your notebooks open because we will mark time words in two colours.
Rule one: if you see a finished clock or calendar point, past simple usually fits. I visited Paris in 2018. She called me at six yesterday. They moved house last summer. Those moments are closed. The year 2018 does not continue into today as an open period for that visit.
Rule two: if the action connects to now, present perfect often fits. I have visited Paris twice. She has called me three times this week. They have lived here since 2020. The experience or situation still matters today. We care about result or duration, not only the date on a ticket.
Look at these pairs on the board. I have lost my keys versus I lost my keys yesterday. Both use lose, but the first warns about now. My pockets are empty today. The second tells a story about one afternoon that ended when I found them under a coat.
Another pair: Have you ever seen whales? versus Did you see whales on your trip in July? The first asks about your whole life until this minute. The second asks about one holiday that finished. A tourist brochure used the wrong tense last year, and I have remembered the mistake since then.
Students often ask about already, yet, and just. These words like present perfect. I have already finished means the task is done and relevant now. I finished at ten past nine gives a closed hour. Yesterday Marco said he has just arrived, so he still looks for a desk. Last Monday he arrived late, and that day is over.
Since and for push us toward present perfect. She has studied English for three years. He has worked remotely since March. If I add last year or in 2022, I switch to past simple because the frame is complete. She studied hard last year. He worked in an office in 2022.
Past simple also appears in stories with then and after that. First I checked email. Then I wrote a reply. After that I walked to the café. Present perfect appears in updates. I have checked email, and I have written two replies so far today.
At the end of class I will ask you to write six sentences about your weekend. Use three past simple lines with finished times like on Saturday evening or at noon. Use three present perfect lines with open connection like so far this week or since Friday. Compare answers with a partner.
Homework: read page twelve in your workbook. It lists signal words. Circle yesterday, ago, last night for past simple. Circle ever, never, recently, so far for present perfect. Bring one question tomorrow. Have you ever confused these tenses in a message? Many learners have, and last year I did too before I made this chart.
