Last Friday my cousin Vera arrived from Cardiff for a short visit. We had planned quiet walks and a film, but her stories about work and travel reshaped the whole weekend.

On Saturday morning Vera said that her office might relocate next year. She told me that management had discussed a smaller building closer to the station, and she said that she would prefer shorter commutes if the move happened. I made coffee while she explained details.

She told me that her team could adopt hybrid schedules. She said that staff might work from home two days a week, and she told me that her manager had already tested the idea with one department. If the policy is approved, Vera will request Monday and Friday at home.

At the market Vera met an old friend, Idris, who said that he had opened a bakery nearby. He told her that sourdough loaves were baked at dawn, and he told me that early customers often queued before seven. We bought bread and talked about how neighbourhoods change.

Later we visited the museum because Vera said that a temporary exhibition would close on Sunday. She told me that colleagues had recommended it, and she said that tickets could be booked online to avoid waiting. The exhibition was crowded, but guides were helpful.

One guide said that several artefacts had been restored recently. She told visitors that protective glass would remain in place, and she told Vera that audio descriptions were available through a phone app. We listened together for twenty minutes.

In the evening my partner joined us for dinner. Vera told him that Cardiff rent had risen again, and she said that she might consider shared ownership schemes. My partner said that similar schemes existed in our city, and he told her that a council website explained the steps clearly.

On Sunday rain arrived, so we stayed indoors and watched the film we had originally planned for Friday. Vera said that she had seen it before, but she told us that she enjoyed the second viewing because the ending felt different once you knew the characters.

Before the train home Vera said that the visit had relaxed her. She told me that she would send photos from the museum, and she said that she might return when the bakery offered a tasting event. I told her that she was welcome anytime.

Weekends like this mix direct experience with reported information. Vera's statements about work, Idris's comments about his shop, and the guide's explanations entered our plans naturally, and tense backshift appeared whenever we repeated what someone else had said earlier in the day.
