Estilo indirecto: preguntas y órdenes (asked if, told me to)

She asked me where I lived. Una orden o petición lleva told / asked + persona + to + verbo: He told me to close the door.

B2 Tiempos avanzados ·

La regla principal

Pregunta: asked (me) + if / whether o palabra interrogativa + orden de afirmación + retroceso del tiempo, sin do / does / did. Orden o petición: told / asked + persona + (not) to + infinitivo.

Preguntas de sí o no: asked + if / whether

Para una pregunta de sí o no se usa if o whether, y los dos son correctos: She asked me if I was tired y She asked me whether I was tired significan lo mismo.

Estilo directoEstilo indirecto
"Are you tired?"She asked me if I was tired.
"Do you like your job?"He asked me whether I liked my job.
"Did you call the hotel?"She asked if I had called the hotel.
"Can you start on Monday?"They asked if I could start on Monday.
"Will you stay here tomorrow?"He asked if I would stay there the next day.

Nuestro «si» corresponde a if / whether: «preguntó si estaba cansado» = asked if I was tired.

Estilo directoEstilo indirecto
"Where do you live?"He asked me where I lived.
"What did you buy?"She asked me what I had bought.
"When does the train leave?"I asked when the train left.
"Why are you late?"The teacher asked why I was late.
"How long have you worked here?"She wanted to know how long I had worked there.
"Who called?"He asked who had called.

En la pregunta directa hay un auxiliar delante del sujeto (Where do you live?). En la indirecta el sujeto va justo después de la palabra interrogativa y el tiempo lo marca el verbo principal: where I lived, what I had bought. Es el error más frecuente: *asked me where did I live.

Órdenes y peticiones: told / asked + persona + to

To + infinitivo, sin oración subordinada
Estilo directoEstilo indirecto
"Close the door."He told me to close the door.
"Please sit down."She asked me to sit down.
"Don't shout."He told us not to shout.
"Please don't be late."She asked them not to be late.

La prohibición se hace con not to, no con don't: told us not to shout. El verbo say no sirve aquí: no *He said me to wait, sino He told me to wait.

Mira lo que sigue: if / whether o una palabra interrogativa indica una pregunta (asked if I was ready), y persona + to indica una petición (asked me to wait). Sin persona, ask to do significa otra cosa: She asked to leave quiere decir que ella pidió permiso para irse.

Otros verbos: advised, reminded, warned, ordered, invited

El mismo esquema: verbo + persona + (not) to + infinitivo
VerboEstilo directoEstilo indirecto
advised"You should see a doctor."She advised me to see a doctor.
reminded"Remember to call your mother."He reminded me to call my mother.
warned"Don't touch the wires."He warned us not to touch the wires.
ordered"Stand up!"The officer ordered the men to stand up.
invited"Come to dinner on Friday."She invited me to come to dinner on Friday.

Todos funcionan como told: necesitan una persona (advised me, warned us) y después to o not to. Con wanted to know y wondered se usa el mismo esquema que con asked, con if o una palabra interrogativa: He wanted to know whether I was free.

Estilo directoEstilo indirecto
Present simplePast simple: do you live? -> where I lived
Past simple, present perfectPast perfect: what did you buy? -> what I had bought
will, canwould, could: will you come? -> if I would come
tomorrow, yesterdaythe next day, the day before
here, this, nowthere, that, then

She asked me where I live (sigo viviendo allí). Pero en un relato de una situación pasada y terminada es lo natural: At the interview he asked me where I worked. Cambia también los pronombres y las palabras de lugar: en «Where do you live?» you pasa a I, y en «Come here» here pasa a there.

Ejemplos

  • She asked me if I was tired. Me preguntó si estaba cansado.
  • He asked me whether I liked my job. Me preguntó si me gustaba mi trabajo.

  • She asked me where I lived. Me preguntó dónde vivía.
  • The manager wanted to know who had called. El jefe quería saber quién había llamado.
  • He wondered why the train was late.
  • My mother told me to call her. Mi madre me dijo que la llamara.

  • The guide warned us not to feed the birds.
  • The doctor advised me to rest for a week.
  • He asked me if I would meet him there the next day. Me preguntó si me encontraría con él allí al día siguiente.

Errores típicos

  • She asked me where did I live. She asked me where I lived. en la pregunta indirecta no hay do ni orden de pregunta: el sujeto va antes del verbo
  • He asked me if did I like the job. He asked me if I liked the job. después de if va el orden de afirmación, sin did
  • She asked me that if I was tired. She asked me if I was tired. no se pone that delante de if: «preguntó si» es solo asked if
  • He said me to wait. He told me to wait. say no admite persona + to + verbo; para una orden se usa told + persona
  • She told to close the door. She told me to close the door. después de told siempre va la persona: told me, told him
  • The teacher told us no to talk. The teacher told us not to talk. la negación es not to, no «no to»: not to + infinitivo
  • My boss told me be on time. My boss told me to be on time. el subjuntivo español («que llegara») se convierte en to + infinitivo: falta el to

Preguntas frecuentes

Después va el orden de una afirmación, sin do / does / did: He asked me where I lived.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre if y whether?

En las preguntas de sí o no son intercambiables: She asked if I was free y She asked whether I was free son correctas.

He asked me what time it was.

Told + persona + to transmite una orden: He told me to wait. Asked + persona + to transmite una petición cortés: He asked me to wait. Said no se combina con persona + to + verbo: He said me to wait es incorrecto.
