IV . The Rooster on the Gate In the afternoon , the three friends pass a farm . There is a white house , a yard with hens and a big wooden gate . On top of the gate sits a rooster . He is red , with a very big comb on his head . And he is crowing as loud as he can . “ Cock - a - doodle - doo ! Cock - a - doodle - doo ! ” The rooster is so loud that the donkey’s ears hurt . “ Hey , rooster ! ” says the donkey . “ Your crowing goes right through me . What is the matter ? ” The rooster looks down at the three friends . “ I am calling for fine weather , ” says the rooster . “ Today is a special day . On this day , Our Lady washes the Christ Child’s little shirts . She wants to dry them in the sun . So I am calling for the sun . But nobody says thank you . ” “ And is that why you are so loud ? ” asks the dog . “ No , no . The real trouble is worse , ” says the rooster . “ Tomorrow is Sunday , and guests are coming for dinner . The farmer’s wife has no pity . She told the cook : ‘ Tomorrow I want to eat the rooster in the soup . ’ So this evening they are going to cut off my head ! ” “ Poor rooster ! ” says the cat . “ So I am crowing as loud as I can , ” says the rooster . “ I am crowing now , while I still can . Tomorrow I will have no voice . And no head . ” “ Oh , come now , Red Comb ! ” says the donkey . “ Come away with us . We are going to Bremen . You can find something better than death anywhere . ” “ To Bremen ? Why ? ” asks the rooster . “ To be town musicians , ” says the donkey . “ You have a very good voice . And when we make music together , it will sound very fine ! ” The rooster thinks for a moment . He looks at the house . He looks at the kitchen window . Then he looks at the road . “ Soup or music ? ” says the rooster . “ I choose music ! I will come to Bremen with pleasure ! ” The rooster jumps down from the gate onto the road . Now there are four friends : a donkey , a dog , a cat and a rooster . And the four of them go on together , very happy . As they walk , they talk about music . “ Do you sing every morning ? ” the dog asks the rooster . “ Yes , every morning , ” says the rooster . “ When the sun comes up , I sing . And when they hear my voice , all the people on the farm get up . ” “ Very good , ” says the donkey . “ So now it is clear . I play the lute . The dog plays the drum . The cat sings at night . And the rooster sings in the morning . ” “ And when do we all sing together ? ” asks the dog . “ In Bremen , in the big square , ” says the donkey . “ The whole town will hear us there . ” V . A Light in the Forest But Bremen is far away . The four friends walk all afternoon . They cannot get there in one day . The sun goes down and the sky turns red . Then night comes . “ I am tired , ” says the dog . “ And I am very hungry . ” “ Me too , ” says the cat . “ And I am cold . ” The donkey eats some grass by the road . But his friends do not eat grass . They want meat , fish or bread . And there is nothing here .
