“ There is a forest over there , ” says the donkey . “ Let’s sleep there tonight . Tomorrow we will go on . ” The four go into the forest . It is dark and cold . They look for a good place to sleep . The donkey and the dog lie down under a big tree . The cat climbs up onto a branch . And the rooster flies right to the top of the tree . He is safest up there . No fox can climb so high . Before he goes to sleep , the rooster looks all around him . He looks north and south . He looks east and west . Suddenly he sees something far away . It is a very small light , like a spark . It is shining between the trees . “ Friends ! Friends ! ” calls the rooster . “ There is a light over there . There must be a house near here . ” “ A house ? ” asks the donkey from below . “ Then let’s get up and go there . This is a bad place to sleep . ” “ Yes , let’s go , ” says the dog . “ There is food in a house . Some bones with a little meat on them . That will do me good ! ” “ And a warm place to sleep , ” says the cat . The rooster flies down from the tree . The cat jumps down from her branch . The donkey and the dog get up . And the four friends walk through the forest towards the light . It is hard to walk at night . There are stones on the ground and branches all around . The donkey goes first and makes a path . The others walk behind him . From far away , the light looks very small . But little by little , it gets bigger . And it shines more and more brightly . At last they come to a house . It is a big house in the middle of the forest . There is light in all the windows . Inside , they can hear voices and laughter . The four friends do not know it yet . But this is a robbers ’ house . VI . Music at the Window The donkey is the biggest of the four . So he goes to the window and looks in . “ What do you see , my grey horse ? ” asks the rooster . “ What do I see ? ” says the donkey quietly . “ I see a big table . It is full of good things to eat and drink . There is bread , meat , fish , cheese , fruit and wine . And some men are sitting at the table . They are robbers . They are eating and drinking and having a good time . ” “ Food ! ” says the dog . “ I am so hungry ! ” “ That is just the thing for us , ” says the rooster . “ Yes , yes , ” says the donkey . “ Oh , how I want to be in there ! ” But the door is shut . And there are a lot of robbers . The four friends hide behind a tree . They talk quietly . They must get the robbers out of the house . But how ? “ I can bite the robbers , ” says the dog . “ And I can scratch them , ” says the cat . “ No , no , ” says the donkey . “ There are many of them and only a few of us . And we are old . We need a better idea . ”
