The rooster looks at the window . Then he looks at his friends . “ We are musicians , aren’t we ? ” says the rooster . “ So let’s make music . A lot of music , and very loud ! ” “ That’s it ! ” says the donkey . “ Now I have a plan ! I will put my front feet on the window . You , dog , jump onto my back . You , cat , climb onto the dog’s back . And you , rooster , fly up onto the cat’s head . ” “ And then ? ” asks the cat . “ Then , music , ” says the donkey . “ All together and very loud . Just like in the big square in Bremen . ” “ And what if the robbers see us ? ” asks the dog . “ They will not see us . They are busy with their food and wine , ” says the donkey . “ Come on , friends . Quietly now . ” And that is what they do . The donkey puts his front feet on the window . The dog jumps onto the donkey’s back . The cat climbs up onto the dog . And the rooster flies up and sits on the cat’s head . Now the four of them make a tower at the window . It is a tower of animals ! The robbers see nothing . They go on eating and drinking . “ Are you all ready ? ” asks the donkey quietly . “ Ready , ” says the dog . “ Ready , ” says the cat . “ Ready ! ” says the rooster . “ One , two . . . three ! ” says the donkey . And the music begins . The donkey brays : “ Hee - haw ! ” The dog barks : “ Woof , woof ! ” The cat miaows : “ Miaow , miaow ! ” And the rooster crows : “ Cock - a - doodle - doo ! ” What a terrible noise ! Then the four of them jump through the window . The glass breaks into a thousand pieces : crash , crash , crash ! The four musicians land inside the house , right in the middle of the robbers . The robbers hear the horrible noise . They jump up from their chairs . They do not know what is happening . And they are very afraid . “ A ghost ! A ghost ! ” shout the robbers . They all run out of the house . They run and run and do not look back . And they hide in the forest . VII . Dinner for Four Now the robbers are gone . Only the four friends are left . They sit down at the table and look at the food . “ Look at all this food ! ” says the dog . “ And it is all for us ! ” says the cat . “ Then let’s eat ! ” says the donkey . And the four friends eat . They eat and eat . They eat like animals who will get no more food for a month . The dog eats meat and bones . The cat eats fish and cheese . The rooster eats bits of bread . And the donkey eats fruit and a little bread . “ This food is very good , ” says the rooster . “ Better than soup , isn’t it ? ” says the cat . “ Much better ! ” says the rooster . “ And here nobody wants to put me in the soup . ” They all laugh . At last the four friends are not hungry any more . They are full and happy . And they are very sleepy too . “ Now , let’s go to bed , ” says the donkey .
