They put out the light . Then each animal looks for a place to sleep . Each one finds the right bed for an animal of its kind . The donkey goes out into the yard . There is a pile of straw there . He lies down on the straw . The dog lies down behind the back door . The cat lies down in the kitchen by the fire . The ashes there are still warm . And the rooster flies up to the top of the house . He sits on a beam under the roof . After the long walk , all four are very tired . Soon they are asleep . And the robbers ? They are out in the forest . They are cold and hungry . They watch the house from far away . “ What is in our house ? ” asks one robber . “ A ghost ? ” “ I don’t know , ” says another . “ But it makes a lot of noise . ” “ And our dinner is in there ! ” says a third robber . “ Our bread , our meat and our wine ! ” Time goes by . It is after midnight now . There is no light in the house any more . All is quiet . Then the robbers ’ captain speaks . “ We are fools , ” says the captain . “ Why were we so afraid ? There is nothing there . It was only a bit of noise . We ran away too fast . ” The captain looks at one of his men . This robber is the bravest of them all . “ You , go to the house , ” says the captain . “ Look around and see what is there . Then come back and tell me . ” The robber says nothing . He is a little afraid too . But the captain is the captain . So the robber walks towards the house , slowly , very slowly . VIII . A Robber in the Kitchen The robber comes to the house . He opens the door without a sound . Inside , it is all dark . It is all quiet . “ There is nobody here , ” he thinks . “ The captain is right . ” He goes into the kitchen . He wants to light a candle . He has a match in his hand , but he cannot see anything . Suddenly he sees two little lights by the fire . They are two bright , shining points . “ Ah , two hot coals from the fire ! ” thinks the robber . “ Good ! I can light my match on them . ” But they are not coals . They are the cat’s eyes ! And the cat is not asleep . The robber holds his match to the cat’s eyes . The cat does not like this joke at all . She jumps at the robber’s face . She spits at him and scratches him . “ Ow ! Ow ! ” shouts the robber . He is very afraid now . He runs to the back door . But the dog is lying there . The dog jumps up and bites the robber’s leg . “ Ow , my leg ! ” shouts the robber . The robber runs out into the yard . He runs past the pile of straw . The donkey is lying there . The donkey gives the robber a hard kick with a back foot . “ Ow , ow , ow ! ” shouts the robber again .
