I . The Mother Goat and Her Seven Kids An old mother goat lives in a little house near a big forest . She has seven little goats . A little goat has a special name : it is a kid . Maybe you know the word “ kid ” for a child . That is right too . But in this story , a kid is a little goat . The mother goat loves her seven kids very much . She loves them as every mother loves her children . The seven kids are all small and white . But they are not all the same . The oldest kid is a little bigger than the others . She is a serious little goat . She likes to help her mother , and she likes to tell the others what to do . The second kid is sleepy . He loves the big soft bed . He sleeps in the morning , and he sleeps after lunch too . The third kid is always cold . She likes to sit near the old stove in the corner . The stove is warm , and she is happy there . The fourth kid is always hungry . He loves the kitchen . He puts his nose into every pot . The fifth kid is very tidy . She puts the cups and the plates back in the cupboard . She does not like a dirty floor . The sixth kid loves water . He plays with the big washing bowl . He splashes the others , and they laugh . The seventh kid is the youngest and the smallest . He is a quiet little goat . In the corner of the room there is a tall old clock . The clock has a long wooden case . The youngest kid likes to sit near the clock . He listens to it all day . Tick , tock . Tick , tock . One morning the mother goat takes her basket . “ Children , ” she says , “ come here . All seven of you . ” The seven kids run to her . “ I must go into the forest , ” she says . “ I need to find food for us . I will be away for some hours . ” “ Can we come with you ? ” asks the fourth kid . “ No , my dear , ” says the mother . “ You must stay at home . And you must listen to me very carefully . It is about the wolf . ” The kids stop moving . They know about the wolf . He is big , and he is bad . “ The wolf is hungry , ” says the mother . “ If he comes in , he will eat you all . He is clever . He often plays tricks . He will say , ‘ I am your mother . ’ But you will know him . He has a rough voice . It is not soft . It is loud and ugly . And he has black feet . ” “ A rough voice , ” says the oldest kid . “ And black feet , ” says the fifth kid . “ Yes , ” says the mother . “ I have a soft voice . And I have white feet . Do not open the door to anyone with a rough voice or black feet . ” “ Dear mother , ” say the kids , “ we will be very careful . Don’t worry . You can go . ” The mother goat looks at her seven kids . She kisses them one by one . “ Maa ! ” she says . That is the sound a goat makes . Then she goes out , and she walks into the forest . She is not worried . Her children are good children .
