“ Yes , ” says the oldest kid . “ It is Mother ! ” The kids are very happy . They believe the soft voice , and they believe the white feet . Even the youngest kid is happy . He jumps up and down near the clock . The oldest kid turns the key , and she opens the door . And who comes in ? It is not their mother . It is the wolf ! VI . Where Can We Hide ? The wolf stands in the doorway . He is very big , and his eyes are yellow . He smiles , and they can see all his teeth . The kids scream . They are very , very afraid . They run everywhere . They want to hide . The oldest kid runs under the table . The second kid jumps into the bed . He hides under the big soft covers . The third kid jumps into the old stove . The fire is out , but it is still warm and dark in there . The fourth kid runs into the kitchen . He hides behind the pots . The fifth kid opens the cupboard , and she gets in with the cups and the plates . The sixth kid gets under the big washing bowl . And the youngest kid ? He opens the long wooden case of the tall clock . He gets inside , and he shuts it . It is very dark and very small in there . Tick , tock . Tick , tock . The wolf looks round the room . “ Little goats ! ” he calls . His voice is rough again now . “ Where are you ? ” He pushes the table over , and he finds the oldest kid . He opens his big mouth , and he swallows her whole , in one go . He does not bite . He pulls the covers off the bed , and he finds the second kid . He swallows him too . He throws the chairs and the benches down . He looks in the stove , and he finds the third kid . He looks in the kitchen , and he finds the fourth kid . He opens the cupboard , and he finds the fifth kid . He kicks the washing bowl , and it breaks . Under it he finds the sixth kid . One after the other , the wolf swallows them all , each one whole . He is very greedy . Now the wolf is standing near the clock . In the clock case the youngest kid does not move . He does not make a sound . He only hears the clock . Tick , tock . Tick , tock . The wolf looks round the room again . He does not look in the clock case . “ Mmm , ” he says . “ My belly is very full . ” He is full and tired now . He goes slowly out of the house . He does not shut the door . Outside there is a green field with a big tree in it . The wolf lies down under the tree . He closes his eyes . Soon he is asleep . In the clock case the youngest kid sits alone in the dark . He is very small , and he is very afraid . “ Mother , ” he says quietly . “ Mother , please come home . ”
