VII . Mother Comes Home After some time , the mother goat comes out of the forest . Her basket is full of food . There are green leaves and sweet apples . There is something for each of her seven kids . She walks to her little house . Then she stops . The door is open . It is wide open ! “ Oh no , ” she says . “ Oh no , no , no . ” She runs into the house . What does she see ? The table is on the floor . The chairs and the benches are on the floor too . The washing bowl is in pieces . The covers and the pillows are not on the bed . They are all over the room . “ Children ! ” she calls . “ Where are you ? ” Nobody answers . She looks behind the table . Nobody is there . She looks in the bed . Nobody is there . She looks in the stove , in the kitchen and in the cupboard . They are all empty . She calls her children one by one . She calls the oldest . She calls the second and the third . She calls the fourth , the fifth and the sixth . Nobody answers . It is very quiet in the house . At last she calls the youngest . Then a small , soft voice answers . “ Dear mother ! I am here ! I am in the clock case ! ” The mother goat runs to the clock , and she opens the case . There is her youngest kid . He jumps out , and she holds him close . “ My little one ! ” she says . “ What happened ? Where are the others ? ” The youngest kid is crying . “ The wolf came , ” he says . “ First he had a rough voice . We did not open the door . Then he had a soft voice , but he had black feet . So again we did not open the door . ” “ Good , ” says the mother . “ And then ? ” “ Then he came again . He had a soft voice and white feet . We thought it was you , Mother . So we opened the door . ” “ Oh , my children , ” says the mother . “ We all ran and hid , ” says the youngest kid . “ But he found the others . He found them one by one , and he swallowed them . He did not find me . I was in the clock . ” The mother goat puts her basket down , and she sits on the floor . She holds her youngest kid , and she cries and cries . “ My poor children , ” she says . “ My poor , poor children . ” VIII . The Wolf Under the Tree After a long time , the mother goat stands up . She is still very sad . She goes out of the house , and the youngest kid goes with her . He does not want to be alone . They walk into the green field . And there , under the big tree , lies the wolf . He is fast asleep , and he snores very loudly . The branches of the tree shake . The mother goat walks very quietly . She goes close to the wolf . She walks round him , and she looks at him from every side . His belly is big and round . And suddenly the mother sees something . The belly is moving ! Something inside it is moving and kicking . “ Oh ! ” she says quietly . “ Look ! Can it be true ? Are my poor children still alive ? ”
