The youngest kid looks too . His eyes are big . “ They are moving , Mother ! ” he says . “ They are moving ! ” “ Quick , ” says the mother . “ Run home . Bring me the scissors . Bring me a needle and some thread too . Run ! ” The youngest kid runs home as fast as he can . He finds the scissors . He finds a needle and some thread . He runs back to the tree . The wolf is still asleep . He is snoring loudly . The mother goat takes the scissors . Very quietly , she makes one small cut in the wolf’s big belly . The wolf does not wake up . He is sleeping very deeply . At once a little head comes out . It is one of her kids ! “ Mother ! ” says the little head . The mother cuts some more . And then out they come , one after the other ! The oldest , the second , the third , the fourth , the fifth and the sixth . They jump out onto the grass . All six are alive ! And they are not hurt at all . The wolf was greedy . He swallowed them whole . So they are all fine . The mother goat holds her children . She kisses them one by one . The kids hug her , and they hug each other . They jump and they dance , like happy people at a wedding . “ Mother ! ” says the fourth kid . “ It was so dark in there ! ” “ And it was so warm , ” says the third kid . “ I like warm places , but not that one ! ” “ Shh ! ” says the mother . “ Quiet ! The wolf is still asleep . ” IX . The Stones and the Well The mother goat looks at the wolf . He is still asleep , and he is still snoring . “ Now listen , children , ” she says quietly . “ Go and find some big stones . Bring them here . We will put them in this bad wolf’s belly . We must do it now , while he is asleep . ” All seven kids run off quietly . They look for stones all over the field . The stones are big and heavy . The kids push them and pull them . The oldest kid helps the youngest . The fourth kid and the sixth kid carry one big stone together . They work very fast . They bring the stones to the tree . Then they put the stones into the wolf’s belly , one after the other . They put in as many as they can . Then the mother goat takes the needle and the thread . She sews the wolf’s belly up again . She sews very , very fast . The wolf does not wake up . He does not move at all . He knows nothing . Then the mother goat and her seven kids run home , and they hide behind the house . They watch the tree . After a long time , the wolf wakes up . He stands up on his four feet . The heavy stones make him very thirsty . “ Oh , ” he says . “ I am so thirsty . I must have some water . ” He walks to the well . The well is in the middle of the field . It is deep , and there is cold water in it . But when he walks , the stones in his belly hit each other . Knock , knock ! Bump , bump ! They make a loud noise .
