I . The Yellow Horse On the first Monday of April 1625 , the little town of Meung , on the road from Gascony to Paris , was full of noise . People ran out of their houses and crowded around the door of the Jolly Miller inn . They had come to look at a young man and his horse . The young man was eighteen years old . He had a long brown face , high cheeks and bright , clever eyes . He wore an old blue coat that had faded to a strange colour , and a cap with a feather . A long sword hung at his side and knocked against his legs as he walked . His name was d’Artagnan , and he came from Gascony , in the south - west of France . But it was the horse that made people laugh . It was a small , old pony from Béarn , about thirteen years old , with yellow hair and almost no tail . It walked with its head lower than its knees . The horse was a present from d’Artagnan’s father . Before his son left home , the old man had given him three things : the yellow horse , fifteen crowns and some advice . “ My son , ” he had said , “ our family is poor , but it is old and noble . Never accept an insult from anyone except the King and the Cardinal . You are a Gascon , so you must be brave . Fight whenever you have a reason , and look for adventures . I have taught you how to use a sword . Now go to Paris , to Monsieur de Tréville . He was my neighbour when we were young , and now he is the captain of the King’s Musketeers . Give him this letter , and he will help you . ” At Meung , he got down from his horse at the door of the inn . As he did so , he noticed a man at an open window on the ground floor . The man was about forty , with dark , sharp eyes , a pale face and a black moustache . He was talking to two friends , and they were all looking at the yellow horse and laughing . D’Artagnan’s face went red . He was sure that they were laughing at him . “ You , sir ! ” he shouted . “ Yes , you , behind that window ! Tell me what you are laughing at , and we will laugh together . ” The stranger turned slowly and looked at him . “ I was not speaking to you , sir , ” he said coldly . “ But I am speaking to you ! ” cried the young man . The stranger looked at him for a moment longer . Then he came out of the inn and stood in front of the horse . “ This horse , ” he said to his friends , “ must have been a flower when it was young . It is the colour of a buttercup . ” “ A man who laughs at the horse would not dare to laugh at its master ! ” cried d’Artagnan , and he pulled out his sword . The stranger was surprised , but he did not seem afraid . He began to draw his own sword . At that moment , his two friends and the innkeeper ran at d’Artagnan with sticks and shovels and began to hit him . The young man fought them bravely , but a stick struck him on the head and broke his sword in two . He fell to the ground , covered in blood , and almost lost his senses .
