I am Tom . I am sixteen and I study at Riverside High School . Last winter Emma and I volunteered at the Westside Food Bank every Saturday for six weeks . Our teacher Ms Cole suggested the project after a class discussion about community support . We contacted the food bank manager in early November . She explained how volunteers sorted donations and packed boxes for local families . Emma and I completed a short training session on the first Friday evening . We learned safety rules and practiced lifting light crates together . On our first Saturday we arrived at eight o'clock in the morning . The warehouse looked busy with pallets and labelled shelves . A coordinator handed us gloves and name badges at the entrance . She pointed toward a long table where other volunteers already worked . We started near the sorting area with canned food and dry pasta . We checked expiry dates and placed each item in the correct bin . Emma labelled boxes with a marker while I stacked sealed bags on wooden pallets . The work felt repetitive but important for families who needed help . After an hour we moved to the packing station . We filled cardboard boxes with rice , beans , and soup cans . We added soap and toothpaste that a local shop donated last month . A woman named Grace showed us how to seal each box with tape . At midday the coordinator organized a short break in a side room . We drank tea and talked with other volunteers about their routines . An older man described how he started volunteering after he retired . Emma listened carefully and asked polite questions about the schedule . In the afternoon we helped load packed boxes into a delivery van . Two drivers checked addresses on a printed list . We carried lighter boxes while staff members handled heavier crates . Rain started outside , but everyone continued until the van departed . During our third week we sorted fresh fruit that a market delivered early . We removed damaged apples and oranges from the crates . We washed our hands and placed clean fruit in plastic trays . The smell of citrus filled the warm room near the back door . Ms Cole visited once and photographed our team for the school newsletter . She thanked Emma and me for staying committed through cold mornings . We felt proud when students read the article online . Our classmates asked how they could join the project next term . On the final Saturday the manager invited volunteers to share a simple lunch . We sat on folding chairs and talked about what we learned . She explained how donations arrived from schools , churches , and small businesses . The numbers surprised us because the need looked larger than we expected . Emma and I returned to school on Monday and presented a short report in class . We described the sorting process and the packing routine we followed each week . Ms Cole posted our photos on the classroom wall . Several students signed up for the spring volunteer list .
