Reporter : Thanks for meeting me today , Ben . Our readers enjoy stories about first jobs . Can you describe how you started at the Riverside Café last autumn ? Ben : I applied online after a friend mentioned an opening near the bus stop . The manager called me on a Tuesday and invited me for a short talk on Thursday afternoon . I arrived ten minutes early and waited with two other applicants in the corner booth . Reporter : What happened during that first meeting ? Ben : The manager asked simple questions about my schedule and my experience with customers . I answered honestly and explained that I studied hospitality at college on weekday mornings . She smiled when I described a school project where we planned a menu and served teachers during an open day . Reporter : When did you actually start work ? Ben : I started the following Monday at six in the morning . The head barista explained how the espresso machine worked and how we labeled milk bottles in the fridge . I watched carefully , copied her steps , and practiced steaming milk while the café stayed quiet before the rush . Reporter : How did the first busy morning feel ? Ben : Orders arrived quickly , and tickets printed near the grill . I moved between the counter and the tables , and I dropped one tray but picked up the cups before they rolled onto the floor . The manager reassured me , and regular customers smiled when I apologized and delivered their toast a minute later . Reporter : Did your tasks change during the week ? Ben : On Wednesday I cleaned the outdoor tables and gathered leaves from the path near the entrance . On Friday I restocked napkins and sugar packets while a delivery driver unloaded boxes at the back door . Each shift ended with a short review where we discussed mistakes and ideas for faster service . Reporter : What did you learn after one month ? Ben : I learned to listen first and repeat orders before I turned toward the machine . I also learned names of five regulars who arrived before eight . Last month the manager trusted me to close the till on quiet evenings , and I felt proud when she thanked me in front of the team . Reporter : Would you recommend this job to other students ? Ben : Yes . The work tired my legs , but it helped me practice patience and clear communication . I already planned to stay through the winter term and hoped to train as a shift helper during quieter weeks . When new students applied with honest answers and a calm smile , the team usually welcomed them quickly .
