Nora was making tea when her phone buzzed . The subject line said her bank account would be locked that evening unless she confirmed her password . She wanted the account to stay hers . Her rent goes out from that account , and she did not want a surprise block on it . The message looked tidy . It used the bank's colours and a short link . Under the logo , the sender was not the bank . The address was a string of letters she had never seen , with the bank's name pushed into the middle . She did not tap the link . She had seen this shape before . Someone pretends to be a place you trust and asks you to type a password . People call that phishing . Her bank does not ask for a password by email . If she wants to know the account is all right , she can open the app herself . She does not need the link in this message . She closed the email and opened the bank app herself . It asked for her password , a long one she does not reuse on shops or on her email . A password manager on the phone filled it in . She did not type it from memory , and she did not type it into the email . Then the app asked for a second proof : a short code that arrived on the same phone . She entered the code . The account opened . The balance sat where she had left it . Nothing in the app said she must confirm a password or lose access that evening . She had turned that second check on for a simple reason . A password alone does not open this account . The app also wants the code from her phone . She uses the same extra check on her email , because a reset message for her other accounts arrives there . A stranger with one stolen password still needs that code . She went back to the first message only to delete it . She did not reply . She did not open the link to see where it led . The colours had been easy to copy . The request had given it away : send the password , or we will close the account . The kettle clicked off . Nora poured the tea . The account was still hers , and the rent could still leave it . That was what she had wanted when the phone buzzed .
