Lena runs the night shift beside a metal press . A sensor watches the space in front of the blade . She wants the machine to stop if a hand or a loose glove comes too close , and she wants that stop at once . She also wants a record of the week , so the morning crew can see which press is starting to drift . Those two wants are not the same job . Cloud computing keeps the heavy work in large data centers . The shop uses storage and computing power there , and a person with access can open the reports from somewhere else . That is a good home for the weekly record and a poor home for the stop . A sensor reading would have to travel out , wait , and travel back . People call that wait latency . On this floor she cannot afford it . Edge computing keeps the urgent work next to the machine . A small computer on the floor reads the sensor and acts there , before the decision has to cross the country . The same hurry shows up elsewhere : a vehicle that must brake , a line that must halt , a ship that must still choose when the link to shore drops . On this shift the press starts to drift . The box cuts the power before her hand reaches the red button . She does not send every reading from the night . The morning needs a short summary , and the box can keep the rest beside the press . Later that summary sits in the cloud with the others . This press has been drifting more often than the one beside it . The box made the stop . The cloud made the pattern visible . On a ship , or far from a city , the connection can fail . What must happen now can stay where the work is . What can wait can travel later . A clinic uses the same split for privacy . Readings can stay on its own machines , and a summary can leave with the name removed . The fuller record stays in the building . The hard part is care . A cloud service is watched in one place , and its updates arrive together . The box by the press sits in a loud room , and nobody from a data center walks past it . A guarded center does not make a forgotten box safe . Someone in the shop still has to notice when it goes quiet . She arrived wanting to pick a side . She leaves without a winner . The press needed a decision that could not travel . The morning needed a memory that could .
