Priya wants to know which calls she can skip . Some of the people on her missed - visit list already came to the clinic , and she wants that sorted before she locks the door . The screen should know . It does not . The same patient sits on two rows , another row has no date , and a third is only a phone number . She asks her cousin Ade for a chart tonight . He will not draw one yet . He says the order is the work . First the rows are gathered . Then they are cleaned : the same person twice , the blanks , the date that cannot belong to a visit . Only after that does anyone look for a pattern . A pattern in a dirty list can be a pattern of the dirt . Priya hates the pace . She came for an answer , not for an hour of deleting copies . Ade uses Python when the file is the problem . He names R as the other language people often use for the same kind of work . He will not let a picture pretend the list is ready . She asks if this is big data . The phrase is doing real work somewhere else . Big data is a pile so large that one ordinary computer cannot get through it in a useful time , so people split the job across many machines . Her file is small . It is also messy , and messy is the problem on the desk , not size . She asks for a model that could guess next week's missed visits . Machine learning can sort old cases and flag odd ones , because it learns from examples instead of a fresh rule for every person . Many banks use that kind of flag when a payment does not look like the ones before it . Tonight there is no clean history long enough to trust a guess , and a wrong name would get a wrong call . Ade also will not copy the names onto his own laptop . The chart can live without a name on it . The names stay in the clinic . They clear the twin rows and the empty ones . Near closing he does make the chart . It is plain . Several of the missed visits were one visit written twice . She crosses those calls off . The list she will use is shorter , and it is about people who were not already in the chair . She locks the door on a quieter page . She had asked for a guess about next week . What she got was the same name , counted once .
