Helen wants her father to answer a question again . Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis has taken almost every voluntary movement , including speech , and the letter board is slower than his mind . She has one meeting , with a surgeon and an engineer , and she will leave with a choice she can explain to him : a cap , or an implant . She did not come to buy him a better memory . The engineer starts with the cap , because it asks for no cut . Electroencephalography reads electrical activity through the scalp . The signal is real , and it is blurred : the skull mixes the activity of many neurons , so the computer gets a rough map rather than a single cell . People who can no longer move have used systems like this to pick letters , by holding a mental task the software has learned to recognize . The calibration is built for one person . A weak signal can be set aside . An infection cannot . The surgeon describes the other door . A microelectrode array sits in the cortex and records a smaller , clearer patch of activity . In research , some people with paralysis have turned attempted movement , or attempted speech , into text or into synthesized words . The clarity costs an operation , a foreign object the tissue may not tolerate for good , and a recording that can drift as the brain and the implant settle . No one will invent a number for how long an array stays useful . She makes them separate what has been done from what is only being discussed . A prosthetic arm that takes commands from neural signals is real work , and it is not her father's need . Optogenetics , light used to switch neurons that have been made sensitive to it , can be more precise than a drug . It is not the offer on this consent form . Companies , Neuralink among them , are chasing denser electrodes and wireless implants , for medicine and for people who are not ill . None of that changes the two choices on the table . What does change the signature is the data . Whatever they choose will store patterns closer to an intention than a diary . Helen asks who can read that archive , and how long it is kept . The answers are incomplete , and she writes that down . An interface can open a channel . It can also turn a private attempt at a word into a file . She signs nothing before she leaves . She will try the cap first , because her father can test a sentence without a wound , and because a failed calibration can be abandoned . The implant remains a later decision , for the day the cap cannot carry his answer .
