Marta wanted a route that would still make sense after somebody blocked an aisle . A picker was waiting . The map from the start of the shift was already wrong . In her notes sat a line she refused to lean on : the whole human brain runs on about twenty watts . She was not going to build a brain before lunch . She needed the picker to stop walking into a wall of pallets . That morning she had tried a genetic algorithm on the map as it stood . A population of candidate routes , the fitter ones kept , pieces of two routes swapped , a few random edits so the set did not freeze . Selection , crossover , and mutation had given her a route she could trust in a building that stayed still . This building did not . She could run the population again . She did not want to , not with the picker already in the aisle . She turned to ant colony optimization , the kind that remembers a path by a mark . An artificial ant that finds a short way to the dock leaves a stronger trace on the aisles it used . Ants that follow prefer a stronger trace . Traces fade , so an aisle that nobody is using grows faint . When a pallet closed the middle aisle , that aisle stopped earning fresh marks and weakened . A longer way along the wall began to collect them . She did not tell anyone the warehouse had acquired an insect mind . She had many small repeats , a mark that strengthens , and a mark that fades . A particle swarm had been the other tab . There each candidate remembers the best place it has found , and it is also drawn toward the best place the group has found . People often use that when the answers are numbers along a range . A route through aisles is a chain , and the traces were built for chains . She left the swarm alone . An immune - system method stayed shut in the same folder . Negative selection makes detectors by discarding any detector that matches what you already call normal . People build it to notice oddity . It does not walk a picker to a dock , and she would not hang it on today's route to make the route sound wiser . She sent the way the fresher traces supported . The picker moved . The line about twenty watts stayed in the margin , unused , because nothing on the screen had earned it .
